Student Visa
This Visa permits international students to study in Australia and undertake a registered course in any of the following:
- Bachelor degree
- Associate degree
- Graduate certificate
- Graduate diploma
- Masters degree (by research or coursework)
- Doctoral degree
Australia is a consistently popular destination for students who want to study overseas and the Australian Government welcomes foreign nationals to the country under a variety of student visa subclasses.
Eligibility
With a student visa:
- you can study in Australia;
- eligible dependant family members can accompany you to Australia;
- when you have commenced your course of study in Australia, you can work up to 20 hours per week while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks;
- your family members can work up to 20 hours per week provided you have commenced your course of study in Australia;
- your spouse can study in Australia for up to three months.
Assessment
In Australia, candidates are assessed at one of 5 levels depending upon the country whose passport they hold. Levels are based upon previous conduct of students from these countries and the perceived likelihood of the student undertaking and completing the proposed studies.
The process seeks to determine that a student is genuinely entering the country in order to study. The higher the number of the assessment level, the more evidence it will be necessary to submit in order to secure a successful application.
Processing Time
The processing time varies from case to case depending on personal circumstances, which visa subclass you are applying for and the quality of your supporting documentation.
If submitting an electronic application, then a decision usually occurs within 24 hours. If applying through your local Australian Embassy or Consular Office, then it may take several weeks.
